John, I don't think you meant "transistors/square inch" when describing magnetic hard drive density, "bits/square inch" yes, transistors,no.

BTW, if you haven't already seen it, my colleague Gene Ruth has done some performance testing of Intel's enterprise SSDs, where write performance certainly doesn't seem to be a problem compared to conventional drives. Thanks for catching that. I evidently had SSD on my mind.

Thanks for the info. Yes, the X-25M does have impressive performance for an MLC drive. Write performance largely depends on how efficient the error correction and wear leveling algorithms are. I know of a few startups that are working on very innovate error correction techniques for solid state. I expect SSD performance and reliability improvements to progress at a rapid pace.
